In the era of digitalization and Industry 4.0, the efficient and safe management of containers in port terminals has become a priority. The SAPIENT project aims to improve the loading and unloading operations of container ships through the integration of IoT solutions, optimization and simulation. This initiative aims to reduce workplace accidents and improve productivity in port terminals. The project involves the development of a suite of software and hardware modules:

Smart Track’s role

Within the SAPIENT Smart Track project he will deal with the development of module 3, in particular:

  • subsystem based on the patent application called “Low power geofence system for worker safety” (n. 102023000013638 of 06/30/2023) and capable of implementing a safety bubble around the worker inside the port terminal during the phases of container handling. The system allows you to manage the movement of suspended loads in complete safety as the proposed system is able to detect the possible presence of personnel under the suspended load with attachment.
  • management of the safety of the drivers of the vehicles that must enter the terminal for loading/unloading of containers. These are staff external to the terminal and therefore not trained to move around in complete safety. The proposed solution is based on the patent application called Man-Vehicle Anti-Collision System (n. 102022000010640 of 05/23/2022).

The system designed and developed thanks to SAPIENT will make it possible to provide a decision support and operations management system in a container terminal, with the ultimate aim of increasing its efficiency, productivity and safety.
